Keanu Reeves‘ next project could be a social satire.
The actor, 59, who will be heard on-screen as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3!, has been eying Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s project The Entertainment System is Down.
According to Variety, the MTV Movie Award winner would be part of an international cast in the upcoming dark comedy from the writer and director who brought Triangle of Sadness, starring Woody Harrelson and Charlbi Dean, to the big screen.
The film won the Palme d’Or in 2022 at the Cannes Film Festival.
Reeves’ role has not been revealed as Östlund, 50, has only recently completed the script.
He has revealed the story will be set on an airplane on a long-haul flight in which the system running in-flight movies and TV shows goes kaput.
The writer and director has reportedly been collecting anecdotes for years to include in the script.
In an interview with the outlet in 2023, the director described the project as ‘a study of how human beings interact in this little laboratory that is a plane.’
He said it will be an examination of ‘how modern human beings are wrecked under these circumstances.’
Östlund has the unusual goal of hoping the completed film results in the biggest walkout in Cannes history.
Reeves isn’t stepping away from his action-hero persona.
He will reprise his character John Wick for the Ballerina spin-off starring Ana De Armas.
The action-adventure was scheduled to debut in theaters June 6, 2025.
He has also completed work on the comedy Good Fortune with Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer.
The plot of the action comedy has been kept under wraps, but it was expected to make it into theaters later this year.
Reeves has also signed on for BRZRKR as an immortal warrior called Berzerker.
He will also co-write the script with Matt Kindt and Mattson Tomlin.
