The Fast & Furious franchise needs to expand with a new spinoff movie, and the evidence of its success comes through a 2024 hit action movie. Universal is speeding towards the conclusion of the main Fast Saga, which is intended to wrap up with Fast & Furious 11. However, there are plans in place and in development for other entries in the franchise. This includes Dwayne Johnson’s new Fast & Furious spinoff following his surprise return in Fast X, as well as the long-discussed all-female spinoff movie. These are far from the only Fast & Furious spinoffs that can happen.
Over the last two decades, Fast & Furious has introduced plenty of characters that are worthy of standalone adventures. While The Rock is returning as Luke Hobbs for a movie set between the tenth and eleventh installments, another option might be better now. There is certainly a case to be made that Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw is the next Fast & Furious spinoff movie the franchise should make. Audiences are already quite familiar with the character after multiple appearances, and now the actor has re-established his box office credibility.
The Beekeeper’s Box Office Proves A Jason Statham Fast & Furious Spinoff Could Succeed
Jason Statham is the star of one of 2024’s surprise box office hits, as his action movie The Beekeeper has made over $135 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. The throwback action movie was made on a modest budget under director David Ayer and has proven to be a massive success for all parties involved. Statham has long had a history of financial success, but The Beekeeper‘s box office is another strong reminder of how big of a draw he is for audiences. It gives him another viable franchise option away from Fast & Furious too.
Instead of Statham continuing to explore franchises away from Fast & Furious, Universal should finally use The Beekeeper‘s success to push forward with an idea for a Deckard Shaw spinoff. It’s quite surprising that this has not happened already since every Fast & Furious movie Statham has appeared in has made at least $700 million worldwide. His time as the main villain of Furious 7 helped it break franchise records while teaming up with The Rock for Hobbs & Shaw netted Universal $760 million. A Shaw Fast & Furious spinoff movie could even reteam Statham and Ayer after The Beekeeper.
Fast & Furious Has Already Set Up The Perfect Deckard Shaw Spinoff Movie
The idea of a Deckard Shaw-led Fast & Furious spinoff movie is something that the franchise has already perfectly set up too. Jason Statham only had a brief role in Fast X, and his screentime ended with him leaving to go find his family and ensure their safety from Jason Momoa’s villain Dante Reyes. The Fast & Furious movies have already introduced three of his family members: his sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), his brother, Owen (Luke Evans), and their mother, Queenie (Helen Mirren). Shaw’s mission to find his family is an ideal story for a spinoff after Fast X.
A Shaw Fast & Furious spinoff movie would certainly benefit from having a proven box office star like Jason Statham in the lead role. Appearances from Kirby, Evans, and Mirren would also go a long way, while other supporting characters like Madam M (Eiza González) could also come back. All Fast & Furious needs is for Universal to have an interest in a spinoff centered around Statham’s character to make one happen. After seeing how well The Beekeeper has done, there is no reason why they should hold off.
